That's because when I started (1996, see question 1) I already had most of the programs and used them for other things, as I knew how they worked I stuck with them. I have updated some programs to newer versions for extra features but I don't want to have to go through the learning process again unless I have to!
With the change to Windows 7 in early 2010 I found that some of my older programs no longer worked (no backward compatibility) so I've had to change things, often going for the updated (Windows 7 certified) versions of programs I was already using.
