Abbreviations are used in recipes to save writing things out in full all the time. I've also listed their equivalents as well so that if you don't have the required measuring device you can, at least, come close! (Metric to Imperial equavalents are not always exact, try to use only one set of measurements in a recipe).
If you know of any I've missed or that you find useful, please let me know at webmaster@highfields-arc.co.uk and I will add them.
Note: The Imperial units used on this page refer to the Imperial units used in the UK unless otherwise noted.
When cup is used for dry ingredients it is a measurement of volume and, as such, does not lend itself to exact equivalents in weight (but see American Cup below).
1/16 cup Equivalent to 1 tbsp or 3 tsp
1/8 cup Equivalent to 2 tbsp
1/6 cup Equivalent to 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
1/4 cup Equivalent to 4 tbsp
1/3 cup Equivalent to 5 tbsp + 1 tsp
3/8 cup Equivalent to 6 tbsp
1/2 cup Equivalent to 8 tbsp
2/3 cup Equivalent to 10 tbsp + 2 tsp
3/4 cup Equivalent to 12 tbsp
7/8 cup Equivalent to 14 tbsp
1 cup Equivalent to 16 tbsp.
Note: If a recipe has it's ingredients all listed in cups or parts of a cup you could use any cup for measuring (the same cup for all ingredients) and the result should be the same, albeit a different serving size at the end.
Note: The American Cup is 8 floz or half an American Pint. Bear this in mind if using a recipe from an American website that uses a cup measurement. Also the Americans have a standardised method for dry weight goods measured in cups as well.
