Food Facts.
(Small articles published in Newspapers during WWII)

Not one of the usual recipe pages. This page has been made possible by somebody who wishes to be credited only as "Old-Timer" who passed these on to me for inclusion on the site, (along with the war time Carrots leaflet, elsewhere in this recipe area) thanks Old-Timer.

It is certainly interesting seeing what had to be done in war time to eke out food reserves. These short articles carried advice, hints & tips and recipes for the use of the various foodstuffs available during the Second World War. Some of them do not contain recipes, just advice or warnings, but are included for completeness. If anybody has any more please send them in to the usual address.

I have discovered that they were actually considered advertisements and Richard Farmer of the University of East Anglia has this to say about them in his 13 page document Food Fight! The Cinema of Consumption in Wartime Britain:
"First printed in late July 1940, the "Food Facts" advertisements were so positively received that an initial three month trial was extended indefinitely. Only in 1950, after more than 500 advertisements had been issued, was the series discontinued."
(full document available to read at: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/history/documents/article_farmer_12.pdf).

They are displayed here in number order, ones that aren't numbered are named (by me) relevant to what they contain. Click on an image for a larger, readable, image. Some of the images are not brilliant, but you can make out the greater part of the text in each one. Close the image window to return to this page. Each article has a short description so you know what's in it.

No matter how I tried I couldn't get a good scan of it so it has a page where I've re-written the text.
